....from a true renaissance man
By Neville R Waters
Random thoughts and opinions from a true renaissance man…So this
brutha has been chillin…didja miss me?  Don’t you love it when
confronted with that question by your loved one or significant other or
paramour or, ahh…your bed buddy…I mean it’s a most useless
question for which everyone knows the answer which only reinforces
the insecurities of the questioner.  You gotta ask why does one ask
that question…it’s a setup for an eventual broken heart.  Sooner or
later the answer is gonna be, “frankly, I was thinking about this other
person.”  And we all know the pain and anguish of a broken
heart…ugh, what a horrible feeling…
I’ll never forget my first “real” broken
heart…sorry Denita, Brenda and Mary but
the grade school crushes don’t count…We
start counting from the time we reach a
level of physical intimacy with another
person…some of ya’ll start a li’l wee bit
earlier than rest of us…but I digress from
the topic at hand, the dreaded broken
heart. The despair is overwhelming and
seemingly a state from which there is no recovery…Mariah Carey hits
it right on the button in her tearjerker We Belong Together with the
lyrics citing Bobby Womack’s classic If You Think You’re Lonely Now
and the King of Tears, Babyface…by the way, for you young’uns, the
next time you are feeling melancholy get some Bobby Womack
records (yeah, records, the scratches & pops will add to the
authenticity and gloom)…that brutha growled and expressed torment
that inspired countless artists such as Keith Sweat and D’Angelo (do
ya remember him?).  Some of you, no doubt, were experiencing
sadness with the Tale of the Two Mikes…Jackson and Tyson…the MJ
Trial ended as it probably should have, that is, very few people
wanted to see the King of Pop do the perp walk to the penitentiary,
but hopefully a powerful and painful lesson was taught to one of the
most gifted and troubled performers the world has ever known.
Jackson appeared stressed, weak and sad upon the jury verdict…his
“people” have indicated that his disturbing habit of sleeping with
young boys would no longer occur…and thus far he has been
(thankfully) laying low.  But can we expect the same of that man-child
Tyson…no one knows for sure if his “retirement” will stick…no one
knows for sure if he can still defeat a worthy opponent…no one
knows for sure what he will do next…yet I would guarantee that the
public’s fascination with him has not been extinguished.  DC was
abuzz when his fight came to town.  Mike Tyson can sell a fight and
there are plenty of cities and countries that see $$$$ on the horizon
when this freak show rolls in…and make no mistake Whodini would
be proud cause when Mike fights…THE FREAKS COME OUT AT
NIGHT…where are those fashion statements during the other 364
days of the year because some of ya’ll are scary and unrecognizable
when you get to dressin up & steppin out for a see-and-be-seen
event.  I have also found the state of urban radio to be virtually
unrecognizable…I’m gonna tell on myself, I was an on-air announcer
(that’s right, a DJ) so I bring some knowledge and bias, but whatever
is being done on music radio nowadays is just not for me…hoarse
sounding voices, slang terminology, grammatically incorrect sentence
structure and profane language are not adjectives describing the
latest from DMX, but refers to the jocks…so what if this is a reflection
of a younger target demo…good radio does not need gimmicky
personalities and vulgar promotions passing for creativity to attract
an audience.  Gimme some more fresh concepts like Trapped In the
Closet from R. Kelly…regardless of his proclivity for young girls, he is a
ingenious talent…and my satellite radio (can you hear me XM and
Sirius…free pub…can I get a break on fees?) or the ubiquitous iPod
(which I don’t actually own, but acknowledge its appeal) and I
predict broadcast radio will soon be a relic of the past like the 33RPM
or my daddy’s 78s…and none too soon as far as I am concerned.
And since I’m making predictions, here’s my quick take on Live
8…great idea…fabulous shows…wonderful partnership with AOL for a
technologically amazing experience (more of that kinda stuff to come)
…but ultimately minimal effect on its objective to wipe out poverty…a
problem that’s just way too pervasive for dedicated musicians to
cure.  Well, it’s getting hot in heeere…so let’s take off some of these
clothes and offer kudos to the San Antonio Spurs for their NBA Title,
Billy Hunter and David Stern for working out a NBA labor deal and all
the pedicurists & manicurists who keep the hands and feet in shape
cause it’s sho nuff the season to show it off…thank you for your time
this time until next time.
