Rahsaan Patterson: "After Hours" - Live In Concert by Deborah Hinds
|
Imagine for a moment you’re a ridiculously
talented singer sharing a stage with an
unbelievable band and three heavenly back-
up singers. Oh, and also on stage are three
of your best friends, who happen to be
brilliant singers as well. This was the scene
at the Rahsaan Patterson and Friends show
at the Vault 350 Club in Long Beach
California on October 2nd.
The audience was treated to over three hours of satisfying soul music
featuring Patterson, Lalah Hathaway, Rachelle Ferrell, and Ledisi. This
fabulous night of grown folks music showcased Patterson’s
unparalleled voice, along with his playful charm and wit, and ability to
share every emotion with the audience through his music. Hathaway,
Ferrell, and Ledisi added power and passion to an already
outstanding show.
Patterson favorites like “Stop By,”
“Friend of Mine,” and “So Fine,”
were included, complimented by
selections from his new album,
After Hours, including “I Always
Find Myself,” “Hot,” and “The Best.”
With Ferrell, Hathaway, and Ledisi
on situated in a row on the left
side of the stage throughout the
entire show, Patterson essentially
had six back-up singers
At one point, he introduced Hathaway, and took her place between
Ferrell and Ledisi, providing back up to Hathaway’s sublime version of
“For Ever, For Always, For Love” by Luther Vandross. Ferrell gets the
award for the most vocal improvisation of the night, with her jazzy,
potent, instrument-like voice. She wowed the audience as she
slipped into a musical reverie for an extended period of time, sharing
glorious, back and forth vocal arias with Patterson.
Always the one to share the love and the limelight, Patterson
brought out the opening act, Amanda Dumas, a PYT with an airy,
lustrous voice, about half way through the show. After receiving a
glowing introduction from Patterson, Dumas proceeded to go right
into his After Hours track “The Only One” while the other performers
joined in. At times a concert and at times a bona fide jam session,
Patterson beautifully weaved in and out of singing straight-ahead
verses and refrains of songs to changing up the verses and melodies
to keep things interesting. Completely lost in the moment at one
point, Patterson went into a spontaneous long version of his super-
sweet ballad, “Can’t We Wait a Minute?” explaining afterward that
the extended play of his lovesick tune is something he normally
saves for the privacy of his own bedroom.
The term After Hours took on new meaning as Patterson’s set lasted
late into the night. As he finished the show at nearly 2 a.m. with a
rousing version of his early hit, “Where You Are,” Patterson’s mother,
Paulette, who was waiting to meet her son when he exited the
stage, turned around and said, “He’s with his favorite people in the
world right now—we could all go to sleep now and when we woke up
in the morning, they’d still be singing.” Patterson and his clique were
definitely in their element, and the audience seemed to appreciate
being part of his crew for the night.
