Leela James: "A Change Is Gonna Come"
by Craig Chapman
They say good things come in small
packages, and the saying holds true to form
in the case of Leela James. This petite
singer/songwriter has a big-time voice that
will take the country by storm. She has a
soulful delivery, which is funky, bluesy, with
a rock diva attitude.

“A Change Is Gonna Come” is the title of
Leela’s debut CD on Warner Brothers Records. This project has been
it the works for quite some time, but it’s finally here and it doesn’t
disappoint. Ms James’ sound has that old-school sensitivity, with top-
notch production from the likes of Commissioner Gordon, Wyclef Jean,
Mtume and others.  Having creative control of her initial recording is
rare for a new artist, but definitely a blessing as she was able to
present her concept for the songs.

The first single from the album is, “Music”, a funky jam that questions
the current direction of soul music, and urges all who will listen to
take it back to the days of original songs, with positive messages.
“Rain” continues the soul-searching funk, as Leela delivers the
musical question to her man; “why you keep givin’ me rain, when I’m
bringin’ you joy!”  For the party people, there’s “Good Times”, an old
school influenced jam that samples “Funky Sensation” and has Pete
Rock & CL Smooth doin’ their thang in the break. Talking about radio-
active for the summer…whew!

While Leela can bring the funk, her strength has to be her emotional
performances on the slow jams. She has the ability to takes us on a
journey down yonder with her soulful arrangements of “Mistreating
Me”, “My Joy”, and “When You Love Somebody”.

Leela James new CD is entitled  “A Change is Gonna Come”… After
one listen you’ll agree that change has finally arrived!
