There are great soul singers, and then there's Donnie. The velvet-voiced
Southerner first caught our attention in 2003 with the instant classic
debut, "The Colored Section." Immediately comparisons were made to legendary
artists like Stevie, Marvin, and the other Donny. And it's no wonder.
"The Colored Section" remains an enduring masterpiece of lyrical genius
and vocal perfection.
Originally
released by Giant Step Records in 2002, "The Colored Section" was re-released
by Giant Step and Motown/Universal in 2003. Although Motown Records' marketing
of "The Colored Section" was in no way proportional to its excellence,
Donnie's debut still earned endless critical praise and led to a multitude
of fans throughout the world.
Donnie
has since left Motown and signed with the indie label, Soul Thought Records.
He's currently in the studio making his second album, entitled "The Daily
News." On the new record, Donnie continues his collaboration with producer
Steve "the Scotsman" Harvey, the talented visionary who produced his magnificent
debut.
In part one of our conversation with Donnie, he talks about his timeless
debut record, becoming an independent artist, and why he's enjoying making
music now more than ever.
