"River: the Joni Letters": Herbie Hancock
By Craig Chapman
Herbie Hancock is an acknowledged master
jazz pianist who has been setting new musical
standards throughout his career. His status as
a living legend has been fueled greatly by his
ability to remain on the cutting edge... I have
fond memories of my first encounter with
Herbie…The  classic “Headhunters” album,
which featured the mind-altering track, “Chameleon”. Since that time
each new album has been an adventure in sound. Fusion, Rock,
Ballads, Straight-Ahead…You name it, he’s tried it!

“River: The Joni Letters”, Mr. Hancock’s new CD, is a tip of the hat to
another music legend, singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. Folk + Jazz =
interesting concept indeed. Joined by an all-star cast, Herbie and
friends lovingly interpret the gems of the Mitchell songbook.

We are graced with some interesting vocal performances. “Court and
Spark” featuring Norah Jones, “River” with Corrine Bailey Rae, and an
amazing rendition of “Edith and the Kingpin” by fan favorite Tina
Turner (who really needs to record a jazz CD). As a special treat, Ms.
Joni Mitchell joins Herbie for a soothing version of “Tea Leaf
Prophecy”. Mr. Hancock and his piano, supply the vocal track for the
Mitchell classic “Both Sides Now”..

“River: The Joni Letters”, another musical adventure from the
undisputed master, Mr. Herbie Hancock.
