"Sweet Classic Soul": Maysa
by Craig Chapman
soul diva Maysa has released a brand new CD
entitled “Sweet Classic Soul” on the Shanachie
Entertainment label. Considered by many as
the voice of Incognito, Ms. Leak’s new project
is a sultry collection of R&B classics made
popular by the likes of Chaka Khan, Stevie
Wonder, Major Harris, and a host of other
legendary singers.

Over the last year or so, we’ve seen a barrage of artists present their
interpretations of vintage hits with mixed results. “Sweet Classic
Soul”, rises to the top of this emerging genre on the strength of the
sensual vocal expertise of Maysa, along with a savvy selection of
songs that she works her magic on.

The production of each song on the project is faithful to the original
versions, but have a new energy and a jazzy feel that we have to
come to expect from this diva. Rufus & Chaka’s “Any Love” is a party
starter, complete with some improvised scat singing. She gives Stevie
Wonder’s “All I Do” a 2006 Club Remix that’ll have you smiling,
dancing and singing. Her version of Barry White’s “Playing Your Game
Baby” is so smooth, the maestro is grinning from ear to ear in
heavenly clouds above.

Ms Leaks is in rare form on the slow jams, so I have to warn you to
be careful with whom you play this album around. Passion, Lust, and
Love could break out in a big way! You’ll enjoy Rose Royce’s “Wishing
On A Star”, The Isley’s “Don’t Say Goodnight”, and a beautiful take of
Roberta Flack’s “The First Time (I Ever Saw Your Face)”.

But wait! The standouts on the CD are Teddy’s “Come Go With Me”,
which has a nice duet touch, Major Harris’ “Love Won’t Let Me Wait
(one of my all-time favs), and The Stylistics’ “Love Come Easy”, which
takes on new life with updated production, and  a slower tempo.

“Sweet Classic Soul” by Maysa Leak. It’s real music... from a talented
artist... that is deserving of a spot in your CD changer.
