2004 Music Awards: Grammy Review / Soul Train Preview by Mike H. - Music Editor
|

The music awards season has fully gotten underway, and as the
Grammys roll past and the Soul Train Awards loom on the horizon, two
names pop up loud and clear: Beyonce & Luther Vandross.
Beyonce has seen herstock go up even higher than it was (if possible),
with her five wins and two electrifying performances at the Grammys,
and she leads all Soul Train nominees with four nods. Luther's been the
sentimental favorite after the stroke he suffered last spring, and
managed to take home three Grammys as well as a pair of Soul Train
nods.
The Grammy show itself was one of the most watchable in recent
memory. Despite the fact that Janet Jackson was unceremoniously
ousted from the show, the awards were correctly given and the
performances were almost all memorable, even the oddball pairings like
Sean Paul with Sting and Beyonce with Prince. OutKast's pair of
performances were notable even though they've now performed "The
Way You Move" and "Hey Ya!" into oblivion, and despite being the most
hated human in the Black community right now, Justin Timberlake gave
one of the most credibly soulful performances of the evening.
The awards themselves were pretty on point, with Grammy rightfully
ignoring 50 Cent as Best New Artist. 50's decision to jump on stage
when the winner was announced anyway (most of which was cut from
the tape-delayed airing) was easily the evening's most immature
moment. The Soul Train folks did Grammy one better by shutting 50 out
of the awards entirely, with only one nod (Best New Artist) going to his
G-Unit crew. I can only imagine that the oversight was due to folks on
the nominating committee just not liking 50. It can't be due to social
responsibility if R. Kelly is consequently up for two awards. That
aside, one can't really argue with many of the nominations.
Mary J. Blige continues to get accolades for her musically satisfying
but commercially underwhelming "Love & Life", while Soul Train also
wisely acknowledged up-and-coming male singers Dwele & Anthony
Hamilton. Husband/wife duo Kindred The Family Soul also scored a
nomination despite their album not being a best seller.
Strangely enough, 2004 promises to actually be a good year for
music awards shows. The Soul Train show boasts a scheduled
appearance for Ms. Jackson, so the show should at the very least be
interesting. At the very least, it should be a cleanup fest for Beyonce
and another sentimental tribute to Luther, who definitely should be
honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award this time around.
